September Birthstone: Sapphire
According to historians in ancient times a gift of sapphire was a pledge of honesty, purity and loyalty. Sapphire today symbolizes the birthstone for September in the United States. It also celebrates a 45th year wedding anniversary. Sapphire is also associated with royalty and romance. The word sapphire comes from the Greek word sappheiros which means blue. Sapphire is mostly known for its beautiful different tones of blues. However, sapphire comes in all other colors except for red. Sapphire is a variety of the same species as ruby. These two gems are the tough and durable Corundum mineral. Therefore, any corundum that doesn’t qualify as a ruby is considered sapphire. Sapphires can come in yellow, orange, green, pink, purple and even gray, black or brown. These fancy color sapphires are more rare than blue sapphires specially in large carat sizes.
Sapphire has a great benefit and it is the way sapphire show its color beautifully when they are set in just about any color metal; yellow gold, white gold or platinum. Sapphires are very hard and tough gemstones. These can be used in any type or style of jewelry, and worn by just about anyone.
If you want for this special occasion something out of the ordinary our sapphire collection will create a rainbow of options for you. Visit us today we will be happy to show you our collection and assist you in choosing the perfect sapphire piece of jewelry!

Together We Can Make A Difference!
Join us! Call Susan to sign up. We have over 15 walkers so far….. Where is everyone???
The 2nd Annual "Pink Diamond Walkers" Event. This event is our way of participating in the "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk". This non-competitive walk raises awareness and dollars to fight breast cancer. Join us for a great time walking the shores of Lake Michigan. Fun was had by all who walked with us in 2005. Decked out in our pink diamond shirts (see link below) we raised over $3800 dollars! Let’s top it in 2006!
This year the walk will again be along Lake Michigan on Sunday October 15, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. You can meet us at the Lake or meet in our parking lot and we will drive you down. Also, let me know if you want to join us for Lunch afterwards. My treat!
There are various ways you can be involved:
1. Be a member of Sandberg Jeweler’s "Pink Diamond Walkers" during the "Making Strides Against Cancer Walk". Enjoy a day of exercise, entertainment, food, and most importantly, come honor someone you love who's been affected by this disease. The walk is only 5 miles and you can walk as much or as little as you want. Bring a chair and you can simply enjoy the day without lifting a foot.
2. Make a donation to the "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" on behalf of the "Pink Diamond Walkers".
3. You or your employer can donate prizes, incentives or other items to encourage others to join the "Pink Diamond Walkers" or to make a donation.
Together we will make strides toward a cancer-free future for all women and their families!
For more information on how you can get involved in this great cause please contact us at (847) 676-4367.
More details will be forwarded as they develop. If you have any ideas please forward them to us at gems@sandbergjewelers.com

Estate and Antique Jewelry
The Fifties
The war was over and styles were changing with this. History has always recorded wars as lines of distinctions between eras and styles. What occurs after a war is usually a radical change from what was happening before and during the wartime. In the late ‘40's Christian Dior introduced his “New Look.” The skirts became long and full, unpadded sloping shoulders, tight bodices and low neck lines. Femininity was back in style. To compliment the look fine jewelry had to go with flow and change. Also, yellow gold was predominant with the exception of larger all diamond pieces that were set in platinum.
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend once again! In 1948 De Beers Corporation set the tone for the era with its now famous slogan, “A diamond is forever.” As to not keep with tradition the fifties saw marquise and pear shape diamonds being the desired shapes. Rather than leaving a piece with a smooth shiny look, the metals mostly in white were being textured. Among these finishes were the Florentine finish, rope twisted or braided wire, mesh, reeding, fluting and piercing. (As a side note, the second generation of Sandberg Jewelers were married in September of 1954. Happy Anniversary Phil and Saundra!)
Floral motifs were still in vogue, as well as a variety of leaf shapes, with increasing emphasis on gemstones and textures. Diamond necklaces typically featured a row or fringe of baguette and/or marquise diamonds flanked by scrolled or draped side elements. Another popular item was the yellow gold charm bracelet. The bracelets were adorned with large, bold charms relating to the ladies life. There was also a huge desire for cuff links as gentleman got back to business.
If you have jewelry from the fifties please feel free to bring it and allow us to check it for you! Jewelry needs to be maintained to keep its original beauty. Look forward to next month’s article where we will review the unique times of the sixties.
