Memorial Day: Remembering our Fallen Heroes:

Decoration Day was first observed on May 30, 1868. It was established by General John Alexander Logan to decorate graves of American Civil War soldiers at Arlington National Cemetary. In 1971 Decoration Day was changed to Memorial Day with the newly established federal schedule of holiday observance.

Today we celebrate Memorial Day on the last Monday in May to honor the nation's armed services and all those killed in wartime. Marked by parades, ceremonies, wearing red poppies, and flying the nation's flag,  it is a day of remembrance. The "Naional Moment of Remembrance" was passed December 2000 and asks all Americans "To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to Taps" at 3p.m. on Memorial Day.

Why not help commemorate this day with a special patriotic piece. We have a variety of flag cufflinks, both new and pre-owned, as well as flag pins and pendants available for you to select from. To view more of our new novelty cufflinks selection visit http://www.sandbergjewelers.com/noveltycuffs.htm or see our large selection of antique and pre-owned cuff links at http://www.wehavecufflinks.com/cufflink.htm
May's Birth Stone: Emerald:

As well as being the birth stone for May, emerald is also the commemorative gift for the 20th and 35th wedding anniversaries. Emeralds have long been the symbol for enduring love and are believed to increase intelligence, protect marriages, and thought to allow the wearer to predict events. Emeralds were mined in ancient Egypt long before other precious stones. Cleopatra was said to value emeralds above all other gemstones. The Romans associated the emerald with Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. They also believed it symbolized fertility and rebirth.

Emerald is the green variety of the mineral beryl. Trace elements of chromium and sometimes vanadium give it the vibrant spring green color. If they are a very pale green, they are known as green beryl. When green beryl is heat-treated, it becomes an aquamarine.

Emeralds are commonly known for their flaws, or a series of inclusions that under magnification can look similar to foilage. The French term for this is "jardin" meaning garden. Flawless emeralds are exceptionally rare and as such are extremely expensive. The primary source for exceptional emeralds is Columbia, South America. Many flaws are hidden by treating the emeralds with oil. This is an industry accepted practice to help enhance the beauty of the gemstone.

Emeralds should never be exposed to extreme temperatures, detergents, steam, or ultrasonic cleaning, as these can cause the oil to dry out and the inclusions become very visible. You should not wear your emerald jewelry when doing household chores such as laundry, washing dishes, or gardening. They are very sensitive to knocks and should be worn with care. The emerald cut was developed especially for emeralds to help further protect the gemstones from strain.
