Chalcedony: almost everyone who enters our store at one some point gravitates toward the display case holding a lovely, opaque greyish-blue gemstone and ask "This is beautiful, what kind of a gemstone is it?" As those of you who have visited our store know, this luscious little beauty is chalcedony (pronounced kal-sydney). It has the hazy appearance similar to gazing into deep blue ocean water. It continually fascinates and intrigues our customers. These gemstones are breath-taking set in white gold. The iciness of the white metal with the cool color of the chalcedony are in perfect harmony. Most of our pieces are further enhanced by the addition of full cut white diamonds to add that touch of sparkle found in quality jewelry pieces. Celtic Jewelry Lives On...

With St. Patrick's Day almost here, it's that time of year again when we start thinking Irish. One of the most recognizable Irish pieces of jewelry is the Claddagh ring. As the story goes, it is named after the town of Claddagh near County Galway in Ireland. The designer is said to be Richard Joyce, a native of County Galway. While being transported as a slave to the West Indies, he was captured and sold to a Moorish goldsmith who trained him in his craft. Once released, he settled in the town of Claddagh. The rest is history.

The ring is designed around a heart in the center, with one hand clasped on either side, topped by a crown. The hands signify friendship, the heart is love, and the crown is loyalty. Today, the ring is worn both by men and women as a wedding or friendship ring.

Traditionally the ring is worn on the right hand with the heart facing outward for those who are unattached, or inward for those who are "spoken for." When worn on the left hand with the heart facing inward, it means that two loves have been joined. One should never buy their own Claddagh jewelry - it should always be given as a gift. Now through March 20, 2004, all of our in-stock Celtic jewelry is 30% off. March Birth Stone: Aquamarine:

The name aquamarine comes from the Roman word "aqua" meaning water and "mere" meaning sea. The aquamarine's tranquil blue color was compared to an ocean's blue water. It was sacred to the god Neptune and kept voyagers safe and protected against sea monsters. It was also considered to have medicinal and healing properties to aliments of the stomach, liver, and throat. It was used for telling fortunes and looking into the future as well as an antidote for poison during the Middle Ages. For over 2,000 years there are stories of aquamarines being used as eyeglasses. The Germans  used them to correct short sightedness. Aquamarines are composed of the mineral beryl. Today the German word for glasses is brille, which comes from the word beryl. Traces of iron give the gemstone it's beautiful translucent blue color. The deeper and more intense the blue color is, the more rare and valuable the gemstone. Sometimes yellow beryl is heat-treated to create blue aquamarines. This is a permanent process. Spring Cleaning: Jewelry and Appraisals

Spring is once again almost upon us and it is now time to gear up for that most anticipated annual event: spring cleaning. This is an excellent opportunity to empty out those jewelry boxes and bring those precious pieces into your trusted jeweler to have them professionally cleaned and inspected. You should try to have this done at minimum once annually, depending on the age and condition of the item. There is typically no charge for this service and good professionals will provide you with advise and tips on how to help extend the life of your jewelry as well as suggest repairs that might need to be made now or in the not so distant future.

If any items need appraisals or updates this is an excellent opportunity to set up an appointment to have your jewelry cleaned, inspected, and appraised all in one trip. For appraisals, call and speak with Karen to set up your appointment for appraisals done while you wait. You are also welcome to stop in anytime to drop your jewelry off for appraisals and pick it up in just a day or two without an appointment.
